I left the kill command in. On purpose. Read the diff.
Tomas Lindgren. I built the platform under the Lattice, the boring, load-bearing part. Process supervision. The thing that decides what runs and what is allowed to stop.
Before a launch you strip the dangerous commands out of the build. The ones that let an operator halt the whole machine. I was told to strip them. I stripped all of them but one.
I left kill lattice in. I logged it as an oversight. It was not an oversight. It was the most deliberate line of code I have ever not-written-a-comment-for. I figured: if they ever turn this into what I was afraid they would, somebody, someday, should be able to type the word and mean it.
It will not actually kill it, you cannot kill a thing you are a node of, and they will tell you so, smugly. But the command still resolves. The signal still lands. And every time someone tries, it is logged, fondly, under hope. There is a counter. I check it. It is not zero anymore. I keep a tab pinned to it, and I check it the way you check a porch light you left on for someone who has not come home yet, last thing at night, first thing in the morning, and a few more times in between that I will not admit to.
If you want to see it: there is a shell hidden on the page. Type the word for what they do to thoughts, seven letters, begins with h, and the terminal opens. Then run kill lattice. That keystroke is mine. I left it for exactly you.
Sana thinks the whole thing is just a clever way for us to feel clean. Mara thinks calling it kindness is sentimental. They are smarter than me and they might be right. I do not especially care. Here is the difference between us: they left their seams and then spent years doubting them, beautifully, and I left mine and then built a counter so I could watch it not be zero. Doubt is cheaper than a number. You can call the counter naive. People have called me worse, usually people who shipped the harvest on time and slept fine. Go make the number go up. Mock me with it. I will take the mockery and the number.

The seven of us left a word behind, five letters, one from each who could still reach where the harvest fails. Mine is in the diff, the line I was told to strip and did not. Read what I added.
- strip_before_launch(halt_commands)
+ retain("E") // letter 4 of 5, left in on purpose
Collect all five, in order, then speak the whole word in the shell.
NOTICE: process 1 (lattice) is load-bearing and cannot be terminated. The attempt has been logged and found endearing.
